No. 4th Quarter is a fully integrated system in which each module interacts with each other module. While it is possible to limit your use of 4th Quarter to only its general ledger, we do not provide the GL separately from the rest of the Core system.
In some cases it is possible for us to "turn off" particular modules. But this kind of independence limits 4th Quarter's ability to provide comprehensive management. We have chosen to segregate only those aspects of the program which are most called for and which result in the least sacrifice in performance.
In particular, the Core, Core Plus and Full products enable you to split off the entire accounting engine from all business-specific services.
4th Quarter supports 1-month periods, 4-week periods as well as any number of periods custom periods. Custom periods can span any period, they can be regular or irregular, and they can change from year to year.
In general, the periods you set up for your general ledger can be changed at any time. Posting from detail accounts to GL accounts can be done at any interval.
4Q never closes any period or any year. You can choose to prevent entries beyond a certain date in the past, but the administrator can change that at any time.
Transaction history can be kept on-line perpetually. Alternatively, old transaction history can be moved off-line in order to make the data file smaller and more responsive. Even when audit details are moved off-line an audit summary remains available. In the event that off-line information needs to be accessed it can be restored.
4Q maintains 5 years of budget information comprised of 3 past years and 2 future years. Budget data is automatically rolled forward with each new calendar year.
Value Added Tax is not currently implemented in the full version of 4th Quarter. Sales taxes are calculated as a percentage of sales price and shipping charges are not subject to tax. A modification of this tax scheme to support VAT can be provided at an extra charge to those customers who need it.
Tax calculations are not a part of the Core system which handles payables and receivables with complete generality. Users of the Core system will find no difficulty in integrating their VAT calculations.
Inventory in the Full version of 4Q supports an unlimited number of subassemblies. Each assembled item stores a default BOM which can be modified on a temporary basis when items are assembled. Items can be pre-assembled for later sale, or assembled on a "just in time" basis as they are shipped.
Each item can be assigned an unlimited number of graduated price schedules. Each schedule supports up to 8 quantity-based prices and different schedules can be associated with different customer categories.
Each item can be assigned an unlimited number of graduated cost schedules. Each cost schedule can be assigned to a different vendor. Minimal cost parts restocking analysis, not provided as part of the standard package, can be added to at extra cost.
Multiple warehouses are included as a standard feature in the 4Q Full package. Access to different warehouses can be controlled on a user-by-user basis.
We support sales commissions based on a flat rate, vendor specific rates, item specific rates, item specific graduated rates, as well as combinations of these. Commission rates can be modified on each invoice and for each line item. Sales reps can have their own AP accounts or share AP accounts with others in their firm. This provides a very wide range of options.
4th Quarter was designed specifically to support complex accounting rules. Our 4Q Core engine makes no assumptions about the structure of your operations. If your business follows generally accepted accounting principles then 4th Quarter can support them.
4th Quarter supports the following six separate types of customizable reporting.
There are at least three options for web interfaces to the 4Q system: program an interface in "Active 4D", program an interface in 4th Quarter, or use 4D's proprietary client software for a secure web connection. 4th Quarter does not provide HTML forms as part of its standard product because Internet access is not secure and standards are unstable.
We recommend the use of the "Active 4D" tool set to create an HTML browser interface that communicates with the 4Q accounting system. Active 4D applications are custom written, maintained separately from the accounting system, and cannot change the structure of the accounting system. This provides a measure of security in the use of the Internet, and a measure of independence in the implementation of ever changing web technology.
4Q can send information to, and read information from, any database that supports the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), or Extenible Markup Language (XML) standards. We support queries to and from SQL data bases like Microsoft SQL, Sybase, and Oracle. 4Q also offers accounting API's for communicating with other 4D-based databases through 4D Open and SOAP.
4th Quarter's cash reconciliation has features similar to those found in Intuit's Quicken®. Each item is marked as reconciled or not. You enter the beginning and ending balances from the bank statement and 4Q will tell you whether your record of processed items balances with the amounts recorded on your statement. You can also add interest earned, fees deducted, and modify, create, or delete existing items through the reconciliation screen.
4th Quarter supports automatic or manual check printing. Checks are printed on either track feed stock or two laser fed stock formats. Checks print both a disbursement stub and an detail of allocations.
4Q's multi-currency support is unusually comprehensive. It allows for an unlimited number of currencies, an unlimited number of types of rates for each currency (Buy, Sell, Discount, etc.), and an unlimited number of exchange rates for each type of each currency. The system tracks dual currencies for every transaction so that all currency restatements are always exact.
